NAYRT, but it’s legal in the UK for 16 year olds to get married, including to adults out of their teens. I doubt it’s super common or always healthy when it happens, but I’m guessing it’s more similar to an 18 year old marrying, idk, a 40 year old in the US. Just weird and usually creepy, but not absolutely horrifying. But that’s because 16 year olds can be finished with school and starting full time employment, they can drink and I think vote as well. So they are allowed freedom and responsibility that they generally aren’t in the US.

It shouldn't EVER happen. The power imbalance alone in real life is astounding and predatory.

And yeah, I'm horrified by an 18-year-old marrying someone 40 and I'm USian so. Nice try?

"I'm USian" lies detected, no American calls themselves that.

AYRT—horror seems a really strong word to direct at a relationship between two legal adults. I’m usually pretty contemptuous of people old enough to be the parents of an 18 year old that marry one, and think they’re pathetic creeps, but I can’t bring myself to be horrified unless there’s more wrong than a large age gap.

They can't vote or drink (or drive unccompanied) at 16 in UK.
