I'm sorry about your poor taste in ships, OP.

I do think it's a little weird to be hypercritical of the gay ship and not the straight one, but then again internalized homophobia is a thing, even if it's mild.

The thing is, I am hypercritical of canon straight ships. I feel the same way about every (straight) ship in Avatar: the Last Airbender as I do about Janaya, so since the TDP showrunner worked on AtLA, I was double surprised by how well Rayllum ended up gelling with me. So I'm not sure how to take your gentle accusation of internalized homophobia tbqh.

Is Janaya official canon? Hinted at I can see, but a full-blown relationship? I'm not so sure.

Amaya said Janai thinks she’s cute, Janai went into rage mode when Amaya was attacked, and they held hands at the end (like the straight ship). It’s blatantly obvious they’re being presented as romantically interested in one another, with mutual returning of feelings.

As much as I love The Dragon Prince being out and proud about queer relationships, I need to see kisses and/or declarations of love before I believe a ship is real. I've been burned one time too many.

I thought one of these ships only become canon because the showrunners saw how popular it was despite it not being planned or anything. I might be wrong though.

You're right, it's Rayllum. It was popular because they're cute friends with good basis for a relationship, so I'm glad the writers recognized that the fans liked it and made them a couple for real, instead of doing what I thought they were going to do, which is give Rayla unrequited feelings for Callum and have her spend an entire season getting mad at him for not noticing her feelings while he continues to crush on Claudia. I wanted nothing to do with the very idea of them as a ship because I was positive that's what would happen.

Janaya might also have been unplanned, for all the lack of substance their relationship had. Maybe to appease the viewers who whined about "kill your gays" with the two married queens who died in exactly the same way at the same time as the other queen who was married to a man.

I haven't seen the season/most of the show but I'd definitely be upset if I saw a pair of married queens for one single time in my life and they were killed off, regardless of how the dime-a-dozen straight couple died.

you see this is why you were accused of internalized homophobia
