I get you, OP-- at least, I think I do. I mean, I'm not straight. And I'd love to see a lesbian princess! And I love both Elsa and Merida! BUT, I don't think 'lack of a male love interest' is enough to get excited about 'possible first gay disney princess'-- to get excited, I'd want to see them interact with women that they could have chemistry with, something neither character has in their debut films!

It's not enough that they aren't interested in marriage-- Merida is young and more concerned with personal freedom, Elsa has MUCH bigger problems to deal with.

I'm not bothered by people who want to consider them lesbians, or ace! Both are valid, but so is 'heterosexual but I'm not ready/interested now'... and it's the rabid excitement that puts me off when it comes not because they have moments with other women, but just because of a lack of men. I don't like the idea that that's enough, and when people are cheering for this, like... great, so they'll give us a character without a love interest and let us create our own narratives, but never actually show us a romance between two women, trusting us to pour our money into getting scraps?

Comment OP - yes, exactly. It feels like giving Disney kudos for... Well, not even for the smallest possible effort, because it's not even "and Merida has a female friend we can imagine subtext with". It's more like an absence of effort and we can mentally insert something into the space they left.
Times like this I really feel for Alison Bechdel...

I'm so so sick of only get scraps at best. I just want actual representation.
