lol, yeah...Even it at its most feasible I don’t think I’d call ST hard sci-fi.

It's generally, like, completely hated by your hard-core hard SF people

at least it was historically

(Anonymous) 2019-12-21 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I found it really weird, because a lot of the hardcore hard SF people I knew were super into Doctor Who which never explained anything, but because Star Trek explained a little bit, they were adamantly against it.

Doctor Who is basically magic, and it very rarely even pretends that it's anything else. I can see that being significantly less annoying than just smashing some half-understood ideas together.

Loooooooooove that picture

(Anonymous) 2019-12-22 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's a really big misunderstanding of the term...

(Anonymous) 2019-12-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it isn't completely hard. But on the sliding scale from scifi/fantasy to hard scifi, it is definitely much closer to the hard end compared to something like Star Wars. And when people call it that, they are usually comparing it to Star Wars.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-22 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
No, it really isn't. To even be edging on hard sci-fi, you have to incorporate extrapolation of actual science, not just technobabble.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-22 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
??? Star Wars is fantasy with sci-fi trappings.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-22 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Like, I get what you're talking about, but TOS did inspire a lot of scientific innovations just by existing. From the sliding doors, to the communicator, there are a lot of things that are here today because of Star Trek. I'm not sure about the terminology, but there is a dedicated understanding on how the universe works that a lot of other sci-fy shows can't match up with.

I've made many secrets over the years but this is the first that I have been the subject of.

Thanks for genuinely making my day.
