Maybe they did the work when they saw the reactions to the trailers, then decided that maybe people were exaggerating their reactions, so released it as planned. And then the reviews started rolling in and they realized, wow, no, people were not exaggerating (plus apparently lots of people never realized how bonkers the story was in the first place), so they decided to try to fix the thing they should have fixed before.

I thought they had already updated the effects from the first trailer? Also, I doubt there has been enough time since the movie first started screening do complete any major FX revisions. This must be fixing small things.
