See, I don't get people who don't get not liking a main character. Harry isn't the be-all-end-all of the series. He's the protagonist, sure, but the series is also about a magical world we learn about, filled with lots of other characters, many of which I love so much. I'm guessing people think we went "Hm, I hate this guy. Better read seven books about him then!" when in reality, it usually goes, "Hm, I'll read this book. OMIGOSH, I love *insert character/place/plot-point/quidditch* so much!" and then over time, one book or seven, realised that Harry did a lot of stuff that bugged us.

Harry is selfless (I'll hold off on the "smart." He's...reasonably smart, but pretty darn arrogant-dumb sometimes, like still saying "Voldemort" when he knew what it could do and all. Or getting mad/fresh in the wrong situations. But there's different kids of smart). He has many virtues. Most people do have virtues. He has many flaws. These flaws just happen to be the ones that push my buttons most. Harry is a hero. But on the side of being a hero, he does a lot of things that really get annoying.

Saying that you can't hate Harry because he's selfless or heroic or anything like that seems like saying you can't dislike Batman or Green Lantern or Superman or the Flash. They're all (mostly) selfless heroes, but not everyone like every person in the Justice League. Doesn't mean they don't still pick up the book.

You obviously misunderstood me. I get not liking certain traits of the main character and reading a book about him. What I don't get is outright hating him and still reading the book. I certainly don't think Harry is perfect on all fronts and can't be critisised or judged. There were times I'd want to smack him on the head for behaving the way he did. But when it comes to the overall personality, I just like the guy and can overlook his imperfections.
But what I can't understand is how can someone read seven books with the main character they hate to the point where they can't stop whining about how horrible he is and how much they dislike him? See, to me that would be to much of a disturbing factor to actually enjoy the reading, even if I liked everything else. But that's where we're different I guess, 'cause you seem to be okay with that.

Also, another misunderstanding there. I guess I didn't phrase it properly. I didn't say that you can't hate characters who possess certain virtues. I was just refering to the OP's statement about Harry-haters' perception of the character.

Sorry, yeah, I guess I did misunderstand.

Largely, I'm just having problems with everyone who responds to the post with "Yeah, I agree!" because what the OP basically said was "I wish everyone who didn't have the same opinions as me would shut up."

Whether or not they phrased it a bit unfortunately, they used some pretty strong language (intent, not contentwise), and came off as sounding really really rude and arrogant.

I don't loathe Harry, but I despise Hermione, and I've caught a lot of flak about hating one of the main good-guys. But then, I've read a lot of books where I couldn't stand the main character. A few were intentionally like that. It is a preference thing, but just because it's not something you would do, the way people always say "I don't understand how you can do that" comes off as a bit condescending, since clearly, we are perfectly capable of it.

Eh, but it goes back to the basics--geeks love to complain. It's our pasttime.

No harm done. I didn't eleborate much in my first comment, so I see how the misunderstanding could happen.
While I agree with the OP on the main point, her/his wording did come off rather harsh.
Glad we could state our opinions in a civilized way))
