Doing it that way does kind of make it impossible to tell any kind of open-ended or ongoing storyline though, which is kind of an issue in a lot of contexts

TBH though I think it's mostly just not worth caring about the mechanics of time travel because it's basically impossible to tell time travel stories in a way that ever makes sense. So you might as well just tell whatever stories you wanna tell and worry about it later. And it's not like Doctor Who is incapable of telling predestination storylines.

Not OP, but this was my comment. It isn't that I think every time travel story should be written that way. Certainly wouldn't work all the time for Who. I'm just saying my favorite stories are the ones that do that. They are just the most interesting to me personally.
