Re: Traditional holiday arguments

My two remaining blood relatives—my uncles—and their spouses are all liberals, and my aunt’s (my dad’s younger brother’s wife) brothers and in-laws aren’t super conservative, especially as one of the brother’s wives is Peruvian, so their sons get crap from bigots for being Mexican even though they’re not.

My older uncle’s (my mom’s middle brother’s) husband’s family are almost all conservative bigots who make a “not you, honey, you’re not like those gays” exception for their brother/son and his husband, especially as my uncle is rich, well educated, and white. I only managed one Thanksgiving with them and while I love my uncle and his husband is a good guy, I’m not going back if I can help it. With one brother in law discussing vintage cars and golf and investing and a sister and her husband complaining about how dirty Mexicans are, I barely avoided stabbing someone.

AYRT—I don’t; I spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with my dad’s brother and his wife and her brother’s families. Also my mom’s brother and his husband are in France this year (again, he’s rich) so they don’t have to deal with bigoted family either. The rest of my family, who, barring my bigoted monster maternal grandfather, were almost all liberals (my parents, two uncles, and my grandparents are all gone) either didn’t talk politics on holidays, or complained to each other about conservative fuckery.

I never realized how rare that was or how lucky I was until I met people who were outnumbered by bigoted conservatives in their own families.
