You could adblock the image if it's so offensive to you.

Came here to say this. Personally I just scroll down and read on.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I do!

(Anonymous) 2019-12-24 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I am frequently relieved when the writer's note at the start of something mentions the art... and then the link is broken so it's just a little box between two paragraphs.

I hate it when this happens because what if I missed some sort of gorgeous masterpiece? It could happen.

Plus it reminds me how impermanent fanworks can be and that makes me sad.

This.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I can safely say I've never seen a gorgeous masterpiece in the thousands of fic I've read that include art... lmao

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. But what if the one with the broken link was it? And you just missed it!

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Then you've never read something Alby_mangroves has done art for.

THIS.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Or not everyone is as floored by their fanart as you are...

(Anonymous) 2019-12-26 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ you do you, nonny. I'll continue to enjoy the many fabulous fan artists out there.

I must admit, I gotta side-eye someone who is so 'sensitive' to art they don't like that it makes them completely unable to read a good story. Just...scroll on by!

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I have this problem where sometimes when I get an image in my head I just can't shake it. So if I see dodgy art, I'll start picturing the characters with the same terrible faces and wonky bodies and it really does ruin the experience.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even read fic on AO3 any more; I download it and run it through Calibre and delete all the f****** pictures so that I don't have to look at them. If the fic can't stand on its own without images - up to and including "screenshots" of text conversations or newspaper articles - then it's not worth reading. (I do go back and leave comments/kudos for the ones I liked, though.) This is kind of a lot of work to go through for a personal preference, but I'd rather do it than deal with the stupid, stupid, stupid pictures.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I was with you until you mentioned text conversations and articles. Those are literally just another way to format the text (i.e., an actual part of the fic). Your choice to avoid this is as arbitrary as refusing to read any part of a fic that's written in italics.

Then again, I'm talking to someone who chooses to self-censor the word "fucking" instead of writing it properly or choosing a word they find less offensive, so I probably shouldn't bother.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my thought was "just download it."

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
This is so weird, like, to me an image just can't ruin a fic. Even when it's spectacularly bad. It's so ignorable compared to what I'm reading.
Of course a good fic is going to have fan art, and I think it's nice to feature the things people are willing to spend time on to dedicate to the things someone makes. It doesn't have to be good, but as a writer why would you exclude something that doesn't match your standards, when it's given to you as a fan.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I feel sorry for people who make terrible art based on good fic and then beg the author to include it.

Like no one wants to be impolite but yeesh, the bad stuff can be bad.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Good grief, people sure have a lot of demands for AO3. Like, deal with scroll past things - isn't that all we do on the internet all that time anyway?

That's....not where the delete key is

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I can see this as being annoying.
