None of your favorite authors could do great world building when they started, either. It's something that only comes with practice.

I used to be bad at this but years in, I think I'm pretty good at it.

Work on it with your PWPs. Do a Alpha Omega world or something to try it out with a short fic.

I can't write long fic. Will I ever? Maybe, maybe not. As it is I just keep writing short fic that people usually like OK. I don't think there's anything wrong with writing PWP and a few of my favorite fics are basically PWP. I agree with the advice above that you can get better at world-building if you want to, but also don't put yourself down for what you are doing.

What's your end goal? To have fun? To make a career as a novelist? Something in between?

Not OP, but this was made from my comment.

Personally, my goal is to write things people like and to make people happy. I mostly don't write for me, I write for my fellow fans. I like it when others are happy.

You don't have to write huge, epic fic to worldbuild. Try a small AU, something familiar, add a little twist of your own. The more you work on it, the easier it will be. You'll get there, OP!

*grins* it's a good goal.

I used to feel the same way, anon, but eventually I found the right set of circumstances (specific fandom with room for AUs, characters that had a lot of character, etc). I found a groove in writing AUs and learning how to worldbuild through that while also developing a loyal following in my fandom.

Careful, guys. You wouldn't want to upset somebody at F!S by suggesting people can fulfill their own wishes by trying.

I feel the same way, OP. But people seem to like my PWP's so I'm okay with it.
