I went to high school in the '80s so I hated the '80s a lot, but I don't usually end up watching shows that actually have the political or major cultural themes. Just shows with '80s clothes or music, like Stranger Things. It touches on some cultural/political aspects but not too much. (Not insulting Stranger Things. It's not trying for deep analysis of anything and that's OK.) I'm not sure I want to remember that part of the '80s either, especially my embarrassing attempts to get involved in politics.

I've noticed how often 80s themed tv shows fail. Not all of them, but I can think of more that failed than succeeded. And the ones that succeed offer a really different, specific perspective, like Stranger Things or Everybody Loves Chris.

I feel you OP. As another 80s kid, the 80s pretty much sucked. Music is about the only thing I like from the decade.

OP

I liked (still do!) the computers and the video games of the era. Reagan and Thatcher can go pound sand as far as I'm concerned though.

I don't understand how that's hypocritical. Just because you were born in the 80s doesn't mean you have to like everything that happened in that decade.

And yet 80's nostalgia is a huge trend in media right now.

I was an 80s kid but I pretty much hated everything about the decade except for the music and the movies/cartoons. Weirdly, I'm okay with fiction taking place in or transitioning to the 80s.

I was in high school / university in the 80s and I get into a cold sweat when I think about those times. It's not hypocrisy to refuse to be nostalgic about a miserable period in politics and fashion. Also I hated most of the music. In short, OP, I feel you.

I also lived through the 80s and they sucked. Sometimes it's interesting to see a show set in the 80s but only if it's got other things going on as well as "LOOK IT'S THE 80s!" Ashes to Ashes was really good for that.

I was also an 80's kid but my teen years were more in the 90's, so I can look back fondly on the 80's. :D
