I don't think people expect you to read and comment on every fic, but I get that, as a writer, it is desired that people leave a review if they've read and enjoyed what you've written. A lot of people work hard on their fics, and the only thing they get back for that is reviews. A short "I liked it" isn't too much to ask for, I think.
I must have missed the time a person was attacked for not liking a fic. What actually happened? I'd like to know.

(Anonymous) 2008-11-03 05:09 am (UTC)(link)I understand wanting to know when people have read a fic of yours, but when I write, I am writing mostly for myself, and posting it out of a desire to improve. I have since realized after creating this secret that people write fic for different reasons, so my frustration may be unfounded.
It was quite a while ago. It was not a post on someone's story, nor an attack on a specific person, but a general statement that at one point she or he had not liked the fic for a time, and that one of the fic writers had kept her/him in the fandom, prompting several butthurt writers to jump in, and if I may say so, they took the comment and ran with it. All was well for the writers in the end, but I have never seen that person around since.

I remember that post. A newbie writes a post that insults 95% of the fic and writers in fandom. Of course people will be insulted. As far as I remember, I never commented on the post (I may be wrong), but it was the last in a line of very annoying, not to mention demanding, newbie posts, and I'm pretty sure that what happened there was that it was the final straw to break the camel's back, so some people might have overreacted, and I'm pretty sure at least one of them apologized afterwards. However, you've got to admit that there are better ways to introduce yourself to a new fandom than basically going "I think everyone here sucks but this one person."
