Exactly. I worked in a teahouse for a short amount of time and tried a bunch of tea, and found a few that I really liked: jasmine, as an example, and this lovely vanilla chai. I was going to go into greater detail...except the person I'm replying to said it best.

I'm only going to add that loose leaf tea is better, as far as I'm concerned, but it's sometimes a pain in the ass to deal with. If you do find a type of loose leaf tea that you like, getting a thermos (http://www.ymimports.com/Items/fg-tt110-a?)) to drink it with makes it a lot easier. I've actually got the one I'm linking to...a larger version, but still the same type, and it's actually pretty nice.

There's also some bagged tea that's nice and not like some of the crappy bagged teas. Celestial Seasonings (http://www.celestialseasonings.com) has some amazing stuff, at least. In general, going for the brands you don't find in a grocery store is a good idea. They may be a bit more expensive, but it shows in the taste.

I love jasmine, too; ginger tea is also good. You can actually make it at home without using any actual tea if you just boil water with sliced fresh ginger in it and then drink it with honey.

I personally don't like most black tea, so I tend to go for green tea or herbal drinks that don't have any actual tea in them. When I was a kid the only tea I drank was some herbal mix by Ricola (http://www.ricola.com).

I've been warned that Celestial Seasonings is full of actual crap. Admittedly, this is by an old codger of a fellow who claimed to have been to their factories himself and said they swept up dropped stuff from the floor and put it back in, but I can attest to never having seen anything in those bags that looks like it was swept off a floor.

The real trick to tea is twofold:

1. DO NOT DRINK LIPTON.

2. Brewing time.

Also using good water helps, and in my opinion adding the right things to it can be a benefit as well. There are teas of every kind with wonderful subtle flavours that you just can't get if you over-brew them. Earl Grey, for example, is spectacular with cream. Earl Grey creme (which is Earl Grey with mallow flowers) is even better. Most herbal brews are very good, but with berry blends, they very quickly turn syrupy, and I've found that roobios has a similar tendency. Adding lemon gives it brightness, sugar makes it delightfully sweet, there are more kinds of honey than you could count that all give it different kinds of tastes depending on where it was produced and whether it's maneuka or whipped honey or flavoured honey... And THEN there are things like chocolate teas which are delightful, particularly the "aztec" varieties which are often peppery and marvellous. And if nothing else, it's difficult to go wrong with a good peppermint. ^_^

Really? O_o Never heard of that. I haven't tried many types of it myself, but a friend often buys it.

1. I really, really agree. I've never liked their stuff. Twinings has some ok stuff, though.

The aforementioned friend loves the chocolate Aztec stuff, too, and gave a bag to me once to try it. I could see why she likes it. :)

As far as Aztec stuff goes, I like Teavana's Azteca Fire pretty well but if I'm going to have something hot and choclatey and spicy I like the hot chocolate with cayenne pepper and cinnamon that I get from my local Ten Thousand Villages. (http://www.tenthousandvillages.com) It's my one deviation from my loyalty to tea.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] gethenian about Lipton. I dislike Lipton with a passion that I rarely dislike anything with. Mighty Leaf is a pretty good brand. I'm pretty sure they have the little pyramid-ey bags, and I know there's at least one pyramid-bag brand that uses whole leaves instead of ground up dust like Celestial Seasonings and Lipton.

Looseleaf tea can be a bit of a hassle, but I think it's worth it. My roommates and I have a regular Teavana raid, and although I usually don't like black tea, I'm real fond of their Earl Grey Creme, Rose Marzipan Delight, and Almond Biscotti. Formosa Nut Oolong is my favorite tea ever, though. I love smoky, nutty flavors, which is why I'm a rooibos fan as well. I was so depressed when they canceled their Rooibos Macadamia.\

Emerald Princess is a really nice green tea, and I have almost a whole pound of Empress of China, partially because it's on sale because of being discontinued, and partially because even though it's a black-green blend, somehow I like its piny grapefruityness. Go figure.

My absolute favorite place to buy looseleaf tea is Kaleisia (http://www.thetealounge.com/). They have the most amazing rooibos blends. I highly recommend the Bourbon St. Vanilla, Summer Spice, and Lemongrass Vanilla. In my experience, Rooibos really appeals to people who don't go in for leaf tea, since it's nutty and woody as opposed to being leafy.
