Re: Gripe thread

I just had what I hope will remain my worst ever public transit experience and I’m still freaking out.

Some background: there’s an old blind guy who comes to my work to use the accessible computer that has assistant software and a custom keyboard and stuff. Recently, someone ran over his foot, so he’s (hopefully temporarily) wheelchair bound, as well.

He takes public transit. So do I. The other day, he was wheeling his crappy, heavy, hospital provided wheelchair to the trolley ramp location when I saw the trolley coming. He wasn’t gonna make it to the ramp, so I asked if he minded if I pushed him to the ramp. He said “go for it,” so I grabbed the handles and legged it, and was proud of my short fat out of shape ass for getting him on the trolley in time. We talked until I got to my stop about dealing with hospital crap and physical therapy and stuff.

I almost missed my trolley tonight and just barely made it. I was on the phone with a friend and said something like “I’m glad I wasn’t pushing the blind guy this time, we wouldn’t have made it.” I hadn’t told her about it before, and started telling her the story.

A homeless dude overheard me and started screaming and grabbing for me and called me a cunt because he thought I’d pushed a blind guy who’d been run over in front of a trolley. My friend stayed on the phone the whole time, and he didn’t apologize when I finally managed to explain, just started yelling that my smile when I was telling the story to my friend meant I was happy the poor guy got run over, so I flipped him off and called him an asshole, because he was freaking me the hell out. I was still wearing my name badge from work so now I’m irrationally scared I’ll get in trouble or stalked or beat up by the screaming guy. I just want to hide under a pile of blankets and not come out, and now I have a headache.

That's horrible, I'm sorry that happened to you. I really hope it was a one-off and you never see that guy again!

That's horrible! I have a bad habit of interacting with strangers, but I haven't had an experience quite like that before. I've been taking the NYC subways and came across my wide range of crazy homeless people, but even if I start a confrontation (look at them, comment on the music someone else plays) it never ends quite like this...
Generally if he did let you off now, he'll not bother you much more, imo. I get your fear though, maybe just keep your nametag off for now and try to avoid the terminal openings he hangs out at.
