Then clearly it's not for them, is it.

I'm sorry, but like. You can like it. I can also fucking go, "Hey isn't it a little fucked up that the most popular ship is with the guy who fucking tried to murder and brainwash her instead of, oh, IDK, the numerous men in her life who DIDN'T?"

Your ship is not free from criticism.

I'm by no means an expert on Reylo, but I got the impression that what most Reylo fans enjoy about the pairing is that Rey ends up knocking him on his ass every time he tries this bullshit ? Like, I assumed it was a female empowerment thing.

Eh, I'm not an expert either but the few fics I read before I noped out trended towards the "his badness is just the outward expression of his tortured soul and she saves him with her love" variety. Which is a perfectly valid fantasy that's been around since the dark ages, but isn't particularly empowering.

I haven't gotten that impression at ALL.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
no it's basically 'he's a tortured baby and she saves him with the power of her vagina' thing, which is so goddamn boring when i actually LIKE the ship, i just don't ship it how 90% of the fandom does.

DA - Yep, agreed. It's unfair and a bit strawman-ish to pretend criticism of this ship is driven my misogynistic attitudes towards things ~women like (which as mentioned above is the majority of shipping anyway) and then just dismiss the many women who criticize the ship. As far as I'm concerned, the ship itself - and not the critique faced by fans of it - is a result of patriarchal rape culture bullshit and internalized misogyny. Sorry if that's too much "morality policing" for you, but grow up and accept that people can dislike something for reasons other than the fact that some "basic bitches" do like it.

NAYRT and I loathe Reylo, but as someone who ships a lot of fucked up shit, I’ll cop to the patriarchal rape culture bullshit part since I’ve shipped m/f kidnapper/kidnapee and master/servant (in which the kidnapee and servant yell at their respective future partners when they’re dickbags, which prompts them to improve their behavior, and to paraphrase, women are not rehab centers for badly behaved men.

But it is a common fantasy that powerful evil bastards might actually listen to the women they love and become better partners because of it, and there are shippers for whom the more evil and fucked up the villain, the more satisfying “she redeemed him with her ~*love*~” romances are.

I personally think the male half has to have something going for him besides hotness, evil, and a token tragic backstory to make a ship worth it, whether that’s kindness shown to underlings or pets, a strong moral code, a sense of humor, a constructive—so, not murder—hobby, and so on. Kylo had jack shit in my personal pluses column.

But I don’t think I’m shipping this stuff out of internalized misogyny. I’ve met fellow shippers who I think might, based on their critiques of the female half of our shared ships for being faithless or shallow for not instantly loving, forgiving, or helping the men who have power over them, despite their shitty behavior. Some even freak out at fanfic where the female half have had other romantic partners or aren’t virgins.

To be fair to Reylo shippers, I haven’t seen a lot of “oh poor Ben (you can always tell the Reylo shippers because they cal him Ben, heh) Rey was such a bitch to abandon him,” but then I try my damndest to avoid Reylo content, so they’re probably out there somewhere.

"the ship itself is a result of patriarchal rape culture bullshit and internalized misogyny. "

Holy moly. I... have no words. I really don't. Tumblr was a mistake.

AYRT - give me a fucking break. People have been calling out shit like this long before tumblr and will long after. I am so fucking tired of the attitude that any objection to something sexist must be from overly sensitive tumblr users.

Literally NO ONE IS SAYING YOU CANT ALSO EXPRESS YOUR OPINION, KAREN.
