The gist is that, based on American standards of masculinity, both gay men and European men act effeminately(focus on personal grooming, dressing stylishly, greater interest in the arts, etc etc).

I don't think this makes you a bad person. I usually have the opposite reaction, which is to definitely not give people money because they're probably trying to take advantage of people.
