I don't care for most anime. Is this show good enough to be worth checking out?

I loved it, but I'm an anime fan, so I don't know how well someone who isn't into anime would enjoy it. It does have more of a Western feel than most anime because all the songs are in English (real English with input from people fluent in it, not typical anime English) and the people who do the characters' singing voices are native English speakers, and there are lots of references to real songs and bands that are staples in the Western music world.

I'm only three episodes in, but so far I'm really enjoying it!
laceblade: Nana Oosaki of NANA, singing (Nana sing)

Yes, and is great for a "non-anime fan" to try out.

Try the anime Nana if you're at all interested in female rock stars. It's so good.

Funny, I prefer anime starring girls/women to live action shows starring girls/women. This literally just occurred to me now. Hmmmmmmm.

Seconding Nana! It’s so good. I wish the manga got a proper ending though.

Eh...go watch Given? Not quite the same but still boys playing music, plus they're actually explicitly gay.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
The show’s on my to watch list. Is there a reason why two guys instead of two girls would’ve improved your viewing experience? I’m genuinely curious and not trying to snark. Also, Given has dudes in a band and is pretty good, but I don’t think its fandom is that big.

The problem isn't women, it's people writing women badly. I'm sick of anime giving men the full range of human experience while women are only allowed to be cute, naive, and non-threatening. The women in this show have only a shallow facade of depth.

I wish it hadn't dipped it's toes into transphobia with Desmond. The dub fixed a lot of it, but the original all but called them a hermaphrodite. :/

I was thinking to myself based on this thread that maybe I should watch it, but now I think I'll skip it.

I think AYRT is wrong. The three (yes, three) main characters are all amazingly written girls.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Desmond doesn't identify as trans. they're a lot closer to non-binary rep than trans rep and I don't see how that automatically makes it transphobic.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't you get the memo? Everything is transphobic. EVERYTHING.

I'm generally not thrilled how this whole "Mars changes your hormones, now you're all intersex/NB" was handled. It was kinda counterproductive, imo, that every character who got afflicted with the hormone change automatically just HAD to ID as NB as a "logical" conclusion.
