I genuinely think JJ got all fucked up by the reaction to TLJ. I feel like JJ's lodestar as a filmmaker is to satisfy the fans, first and foremost. And he overcorrected for that instinct.

If so, he doesn't realize that the loudest fans don't represent all fans and that his goal should be to make a good film that is consistent with what came before and finishes the Star Wars saga well, not to satisfy a small but loud portion of the fandom that is never going to be satisfied with anything that isn't exactly like ANH or ESB.

I think, from JJ's point of view, a good film simply is a film that emotionally satisfies the core group of the fanbase. That seems really central for him and how he thinks about his movies. And I think his view of fandom doesn't really deal with the idea of factionalism within fandom.
