It definitely seems like 8 was where the change happened. But it also seems completely insane that the SW movies were run in such a way that RJ would be able to make those kinds of decisions and changes on his own without it being part of a broader plan, so if that really was the case, I'd want to know how the decision was made to do that.

They claimed somewhere that there was some sort of broad-strokes plan to it all, but I find it hard to belive. I mean, the whole force connection between Kylo and Rey could have been theoretically planned in some way, but if that was the case, then FA really failed to lay the grounds for TLJ in that regard.

It sure didn't feel like they had an overall plan, and these movies needed one! There's nothing wrong with just making a movie, and then another, and so on, but if your intention is to make a trilogy that will be the final third of a nine-movie saga then maybe figure out what you're trying to *do* with it.
