I set a target this year of 18 books (I managed 20 in 2019, excluding all the fanfic and comics I also read) and am now seriously considering either abandoning it now or not setting it next year. I think your approach of variety is more important to me than raw numbers in the grand scheme of things.

Yup. I do so much reading for work that my desire to read outside that ebbs and flows. So I just don't set numerical limits for myself. (non-work) Reading for me is about fun and sometimes also learning. If it is about reaching a specific goal, it isn't as fun for me. I'm usually reading two or three books at once anyway (1-2 fiction and 1 non-fiction), and I read when I want to.

Of course, I read more this time of year when I get books for Christmas and then spend money from relatives on books. Running out of bookshelf space.

Oh your last sentence speaks to me as well! I married a reader. We both already had way too many books before we moved in together a decade ago although he skews more non-fiction to my fiction.

His mum got us £50 each in book vouchers for Christmas, which we joyfully spent this week. And those new books are living in a pile of other books on the floor because we're long overdue a second hand bookshop/charity shop run to clear some shelf space!
