I'm mostly a fan of the manga, but I was mostly there for the Ancient Egyptian shadow magic and Yuugi and Atem's relationship, so yeah, don't have much interest in the sequels. I'm a fan of Yugioh despite the card game battles, not because of them, and the newer shows tend to focus on stuff I'm just not interested in. I've given GX and Vrains a try, but they couldn't hold my interest. (Honestly, I think it's cause it's easier to skim through the battles reading manga than sitting through a show.)

+1
Absolutely all of this.

Same. That was the part that made the original series so interesting to me, so I have next to no interest in the sequels. The card game is fun, sure, but I'm not interested in watching a show that's just about the card game and doesn't have all of the interesting history stuff going on too.

Yeah, I was and still am a geek for ancient Egyptian stuff, so I can't get into the other series as much

I gotta admit, it was the Ancient Egypt angle that drew me in since I was obsessed with Ancient Egypt as a kid. I also loved most of the characters and their relationships. I did enjoy 5D’s and what I saw of Zexal, but I haven’t enjoyed any of the others and Duel Monsters remains my favorite.

The only other one I was willing to watch was the motorcycle one, like the other responses, what drew me into the show was the Ancient Egyptian elements, not the card games.

Eeeeeeeh, I don't think every DM fan is like that, or even that most of them are, but there is a very specific type of DM "fan" who's very vocal about all the spinoffs being ~the worst~ that I would bet hasn't seen any of them. Or they saw 5Ds and decided it was fine, but all those other more colorful spinoffs are definitely shit. And it's frustrating to have them come out of the woodwork every time a new series is announced to shit all over it before it's even aired, but I really don't think they're representative of all DM fans.

Obviously, since the theme in this thread seems to be that DM is the favorite because of the Egyptian theme, which, you know, that's fair. None of the others have that. And if you didn't care about the game at all...yeah, fair enough.

That said, DM was also my favorite for a long time because of the Egyptian stuff--like, the whole reason I even watched in the first place back when it aired was the Egyptian stuff--and also the characters. Dark Bakura was my favorite YGO character until Zexal was well into year two, and he's still in my top five. But 5Ds and Zexal ultimately won me over, because they took what was good about DM and built on it. And also the team dynamics in both are just. super good. absolutely my jam. Love those team dynamics. And tbh, I don't love Yugi's friend group quite as much so. /shrug.

But there are loads of good things about DM too, so there's no reason it can't still be some people's favorite. I do wish more people would give the spinoffs a chance, but they're not all going to appeal to everyone.

I was into YGO for the characters and the setting and Ancient Egypt. Not the card games.
