There have been gay people (and black people, and people of every other marginalized group, since the beginning of time) who weren't on the side of the people fighting for equality, who for whatever reason (they thought it was "easier" or they had self-esteem issues and secretly agreed with the oppressors or whatever) thought their own self-interests weren't worth it.
