I agree completely that cancel culture is out of control. I don't think it has much to do with the ramifications of cancel culture on the people it proclaims to "cancel" though. Because as people ITT have pointed out, the ramifications are often not very significant in any long-term way.

However, I do think that cancel culture is destructive to the left-wing political landscape, because it alienates the vast majority of left-leaners, who are usually fairly chill, and it gives the right more ammunition to use against us than they can even begin to use.

We should do what IS right no matter what "the right" will do. They're going to find things to criticize us for no matter what.

I dislike Pete Buttigieg but he was 100% right when he said that they're going to whine about "socialism" no matter what, so it's better to ignore them and do what's right.

I honestly can't figure out the difference between "cancel culture" and disagreeing with someone's political opinion these days. Those opinions were almost certainly posted for the sake of getting clicks and clout. And there's a distinct bias going on where rolling my eyes at Rowling's boomeresque liberalism is "cancel culture" but One Million Moms launching a boycott of Hallmark is politics as usual.

f!s has a real boner about Rowling though. Last week it was pulling Dumbledore wank off the bottom of the desk and chewing on it, and for the past several months we've had regular Snape wank and Epilogue wank. Everyone else is talking about brush fires, the pansexual MP, impeachment drama, and voter suppression. So I'm deeply skeptical that this is "destructive to the left-wing political landscape" when my fellow lefties rolled their eyes at Rowling last week and moved on.

I'm willing to bet that Andrew Lloyd Webber was a more clickworthy outrage last month compared to Rowling Wank 14.5p4.

Basically, if liberals have a moral objection to something, it's derided as "cancel culture" by conservatives, but if conservatives get pissed that gay people exist or whatever, "they're entitled to their opinion!" It's just a stupid BS double standard spouted by conservatives (even if they claim not to be) and trolls (who think they're being funny or ~edgy~ or whatever).

It's not. The people saying that are either conservatives pretending to be liberal ("I was totally a liberal you guys, really, but they just became so politically correct that I had to start supporting Trump!" assholes are all over the internet) or just trolls. The right is going to criticize liberals no matter what, so I just ignore any "we shouldn't do XYZ because of how the right will react" arguments.
