I feel like I watched some kind of anthology series, maybe on PBS, years and years ago that did something like this. From what I remember, the stories were set in the U.S. in the 20th century, like maybe 1930s Appalachia or the story would be about a returning WWII soldier or something. I can't remember what it was called or when I saw it.
