If you know nothing about the show, it is just a fun magic/scifi kids movie.

It's tedious, horribly acted, nonsensically edited, and thematically incoherent even if you have no affection for the source material. There are bad adaptations which are good movies. This is not one of them.

Hypothetically I believe people can have good judgement in some areas still enjoy sloppy, badly constructed art because it contains certain elements that appeal to them, but this movie is just dreary and bad. That said, I'd definitely distinguish between "she likes it" and "she thinks it's good." The latter is much more damning of her observational and analytical skills.

I didn't know anything about the show and I hated this movie. (I love the show but I had to be talked into watching it because of the movie.)

Yeah, I enjoyed it. Was it a great well done movie? Nope. But it was fun to me. Also it got me into the show.

Coworker friend was a fan of the show. Discovering we both loved ATLA was one of the reasons we became friends.

You'll get dogpiled for that opinion but it's true. Spoiler alert, most magic/scifi kids movies are pretty bad, but that doesn't mean you can't sit back and enjoy the ride. I went with people who never saw the cartoon who moderately enjoyed it. The outrage at a mediocre movie comes almost entirely from how it strips the source material of its charm, and let's not pretend otherwise.

It wasn't a mediocre movie.

It was a bad movie.

And I've never seen the series. Lots didn't make any sense at all. The acting was absolutely awful.

Cool, you have an opinion.

Stay tuned for other controversial opinions such as: the sinking of the Titanic was tragic and keeping toxic waste out of the water supply is a good idea.
