Re: 121
Fortunately my sci-fi club is run by a cool guy, and has roughly 50-50 boy/girl membership. In fact, our showing of the Riddick series led to a discussion of Riddick slash fan fiction... started up by our straight male president (he just thought Pitch Black was pretty homoerotic. Ok then. Then we were talking about such fan fiction probably exists, because of Rule 32, but if he wanted to clicker-clack his keyboard into the night we'd be all for it, and then he was all 'I'm not writing it, the script-writers are writing it! It's right THERE, it's not even subtext' and so on).
Yeah, the guy I was talking to seemed surprised that I had seen BSG and Firefly (? A girl watching something made by the guy from Buffy!? Watching a space opera which emphasizes characterization and relationship drama!? Madness). Honestly, I think part of the problem is that the mass media outside fannish subculture still presents it as a boys club, which hasn't been accurate for years (and perhaps never was). So fans that actually are IN the subculture are more likely to accept female fans, while fans who take their cues from outside media rather than their own experiences do not.
I actually have the same prejudice, in that I first assume anyone in FS is female, even though we do have quite a few prominent male members. Another way to look at it is when you're on a message-board or LJ, you are not faced with the actual reality of the fans you're interacting with, but anonymity. So you project your assumptions regardless of the actual demographics of the website.
Or something. Maybe some people are just stupid assholes.
Re: 121
Your sci-fi club sounds awesome. I've been debating whether or not to form an anime group, because I'm dying to have people I can talk to about this stuff, and according to what I've seen online, there are several in my area that would be interested. But I've never met any of them in person, and holy male-dominated fandom, Batman, they're all guys. Also, if the professor I mentioned earlier gets wind of this, there's a very good chance that it'll just convince him that we're made for each other. Which is ... not really what I was going for.
I'd definitely agree that the media plays a big part in fandom being generally perceived as an all-male phenomenon. Women wrote some of the most epic Star Trek fanfiction ever, and that gets next to no attention. I'd also say that the culture as a whole has a lot to do with making people ashamed of being fans in the first place. I can't tell you how many times I've read a wonderful story, or seen someone make a fantastic costume, or write a great character analysis, and then heard the creator make some sort of hopeless, disparaging comment about having no life / being sad. As far as I'm concerned, they have a lot more life, and a lot more talent, than they give themselves credit for. But it's not stereotypically masculine, or feminine, or acceptable to do any of this. Anyway, that's sort of off-topic. It tied into gender and fandom because I think women still get the brunt of this disapproval; both in the sense that we're supposed to be the "sensible ones" and because there's still an expectation that nice, normal girls don't write slash. From what I've heard, this goes double if you're over thirty or married. And the pressure to keep it a secret or quit altogether intensifies by quite a bit if you have kids.
