I though it was just something to wear around a convention to express how much of a fan of something you are and like maybe people stop and ask you for a picture and whatever. I didn't know there was like skits and competions and whatnot.

Some cosplayers do one, some do the other. Those who have made their own costumes get a lot of admiration (if they're good), but almost nobody complains about commissioned costumes unless they're used in one of the competitions. The largest con in Sweden, Uppcon with its almost 3000 visitors (yeah, it doesn't sound like a lot compared to U.S. cons, but we're only 9 million in total in this country, heh), have too many cosplayers to fit in the contests, so many come just to mingle in their costumes.

I don't know how things are done in the U.S. of course.

I've never cosplayed either, though I've wanted to several times. I've just never had enough time and patience to make a costume, heh.
