See, I think the point is that he was making it his own. Not just doing a cover, but literally redoing these extremely confessional songs in a way that felt like an expression of himself. I think he wanted an end product that felt like it could've come from him in the first place - as if they were his songs, his self-expressions.

If he hadn't switched the pronouns, the experience would not have been as immersive, or as experimental, imo.

I'd literally never had a cover where I wanted the pronouns changed, until the 1989 cover, but in that specific case I will always feel it was the right call, and will always argue it was an artistically valid call.
