Please don't.

I mean, play MGS because you want to, but don't do it to endorse the GRRRRL GAMER stereotype. The "THAT'S RIGHT BOYS I'M A GIRL WHO PLAYS VIDEO GAMES FUCKING DEAL WITH IT" attitude--particularly when no one is asking about it in the first place--is one of the main reasons why we have such a hard time getting accepted. :/

This.

Didn't comment on it, but man. I much rather like people knowing I am a fan of Metal Gear who is a girl than I am a girl who plays Metal Gear. =/

EXACTLY, Anon. You've put it far better than I ever could.

This.

And I didn't really want to invite the wank by pointing this out, but -- and I say this as a huge MGS fangirl -- isn't MGS the closest action-game out there to an RPG?

It even has super-easy modes to make it easier to get to the story...

As a huge fan of MGS myself, I agree with you.

Hell, the Ac!d spinoffs are even closer to an RPG than than their Playstation counterparts. Both the games are entirely turn-based.

Yes. I think I spend more time watching MGS than I do playing it, and I like it that way.

The secret reminded me a little bit of this scene from the Simpsons:

Lisa: What position have you got for me? (The kids gasps) That's right. A girl who wants to play football. How about that?
Ned: Well, thats super-duper, Lisa. We've already got four girls on the team.
Lisa: You do?
Ned: Uh huh. But we'd love to have you on board!
Lisa: Well...football's not really my thing. After all...what kind of civilized person would play a game with the skin of an innocent pig?!
Ned: Well, actually, Lisa, these balls are synthetic!
Janey: And for every ball you buy, a dollar goes to Amnesty International!
Lisa: (Crying) I've gotta go!

Ahahaha. I remember that episode.

Maybe it's just the sort of people I'm around, but I've honestly met more women who play games than I have men.

132. Same here. And maybe it's because of the circles I run in, but I've never actually MET a guy who was incredulous about a girl who plays game. Sure, there are guys like that online, but I assume that's because they don't really hang out with the right girls.

TV, webcomics and, unfortunately, gaming magazines tend to play up this trope (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GamerChick), but I'm not sure how true it ever was. The first video game I played was when I was three, and my first gaming partner was my mom.

Same here, actually.
I used to get my mom to play through parts I thought were too scary, and she was happy to do it. XD

It seems to be a trope that just sort of...appeared. I'll never understand the outcry of "grrl gamers are here!" I've even noticed that I've been playing games much longer than some of the "girl gamers" who are out there. Not saying it's true about OP, but I've been playing games since the early 90s and have yet to meet someone who cares about me being a girl.

Good point, anon, but lemme counter it.

Often, you don't have to bring it up to get shit from guys on forums. I remember having a really in-depth conversation about whether the increasingly high-quality of graphics in games was being used to mask gameplay flaws. I happened to bring up a JRPG to make a point and some fuckwit starting making cracks about how I should stfu about my RPGs and let the boys talk about real games. This being said to me, a gal who worships Valve, Insomniac, and Kojima. I corrected him about his generalizing, we started fighting, and eventually a mod arrived and put him on probation.

My tl;dr point: Even if you don't wear your gender on your sleeve, you do get called out a lot in gaming communities, so I really do see where the OP is coming from.

That comment was entirely too long. Sorry.

This.

I've gotten the same thing, only it was my boyfriend. It didn't last long I don't think you can say that it's 100% Lisa Simpson quote or 100% zomg oppressed - you get both sides of the coin. I think I just have bad luck - my closest guy gamer friend does the same thing, despite the fact that I *do* enjoy plenty of games that aren't JRPGs (rhythm games, anyone?).

Hmm. I was more thinking of "Yay I'll get to look cool". Which is why it's a secret. Because it's stupid and superficial.
