I don't think you can call it anything but a comedy show. Yes, you need knowledge of current events, but it's not a serious news program and I certainly wouldn't trust it as a reliable news source.

I'd say that the Daily Show is reliable in that when they discuss hard facts, which they do, they make sure they're right. It's most definitely first and foremost a comedy show. I think it's importance lies in getting people to think about the news (and in other ways, there's an article that explains this nicely but I don't have the link right now).

The point I'm trying to make is that there ARE people who take it as their only news source and trust it implicitly, even though it's a satiric take on television news reporting. It's NOT a news show, it's comedy. I certainly wouldn't use it as my source if I were doing research for an academic paper.

I'll have to take your word for that because I've never met anyone (online or off) who thinks that way. I think Jon would be baffled (and possibly horrified) at anyone using TDS as their sole source of research for an academic paper. I agree entirely that it's a comedy show, first and foremost.
