*Boggles at all the Jon hate on the first page* To each his own, I guess. Personally, I love the man.

But smug? I find him very modest. I've heard him, so many times, belittle his own knowledge and intelligence, and even (especially) the show itself. He's obviously a very intelligent man, though, and politically savvy. I remember hearing him have a pretty in-depth discourse with an expert on Middle Eastern affairs (which I find hopelessly confusing, trying to keep up with who has done what to who, and when, and how it affected relations between factions, etc), and the guy being interviewed was surprised and very impressed with Jon's understanding of it all. Maybe the OP equates smart with smug?

Maybe the OP equates smart with smug?

That wouldn't surprise me.

He's quite modest and extremely intelligent. And hot.

And hot.

God, yes. I always have had a weakness for men who are brainy + funny.

I also love his range of expressions, there's an icon somewhere on LJ of him doing an excited face and it's soooo cute.

I agee. To me, Jon's appeal has largely been his ability to come across as humble, modest, and endearing even when he's literally being paid to be fake. In fact, I think he'd be funnier if he were meaner, but I'm not sure I would like that.

Hey, in this country, being knowledgeable and well-spoken is automatically equated with elitism.

That's exactly what I was thinking. :o)

There is such a thing as false self-effacement.

True, but I don't get a sense of that with him, from seeing him in interviews outside his own show, when he's just being himself. He seems even more humble. But that's just *me* -- again, to each his own and I'm sure other people perceive him differently.

I don't get it either. I can get not finding him funny, but I don't find him smug in the least.

But then, I'm biased. I would have the man's snarky Jewish babies, if I could.

He doesn't come across as smug to me at all. Or falsely self-effacing (even false self-effacing probably wouldn't read as smug, just smart).

I don't get all the fear about it being a "real" news show. There are parts that are based on actual news that has happened. There are times ?) I haven't heard something yet that I first hear on the DS--like "So and so did this today..." Then they make a joke about it. Other days I've already heard the news and they make a joke about it.

What parts are people supposed to think are real that aren't? The fake interviews with people? Are people not supposed to get that when somebody reports from a foreign country they're really standing there in the studio (which is why they show up a second later? I don't think this is a real problem with DS viewers at all.

What it does have, often, are real interview questions of guests.
