OP of 101 here

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
The reactions to here illustrate exactly why I don't tell anyone about my dislike for Stewart.

I don't find him smug because he's smart and eloquent. I readily admit that he'd smart and eloquent. That has no bearing on the fact that he's smug. Intelligent people can have character flaws entirely apart from their intelligence. I find his self-effacement gratingly fake. I think the influence of his show has gone to his head.

I am also not a homophobic, abortion-hating, ultra-right Republican just because I don't like Stewart. I think Obama's victory is the best thing that's happened to the US in a long time.

I can't speak to what the rest of the world likes to watch. All I said was that I find him smug, self-satisfied, and off-putting. I have the right to be rubbed the wrong way! Shocking, I know.

Failing to enjoy the darling of college-age Democrats doesn't make me an uneducated idiot or a closet bigot, and the fact that people feel compelled to lob those accusations at anyone with different taste from theirs is pretty disheartening. Liberals are supposed to stand for diversity; or at least the liberals that I associate with do.

Stewart does, to his credit, say that his show isn't real news. But that doesn't stop a whole lot of morons from saying they "get their news from the Daily Show."

BUT I THOUGHT WE WERE IN THE NO SPIN ZONE!

I disagree about Jon's smugness, but to each her own.

The issue I take with your secret is that it doesn't seem to represent the truth about other TDS viewers. Most people I've witnessed saying they "get their news from The Daily Show" were at least being a little ironic, or were trying to make a point about how the real news channels are so bad they might as well just watch The Daily Show. Every fan knows what TDS is supposed to be - it's the fact that it can also sometimes inform as well as amuse that caught us by surprise.

Not too many people are being nearly as mean to you in their comments as you're making it out to be. Again, it's your exaggeration that gets you into trouble. It's like you're angling to be seen as misunderstood.

This is exactly why we're all making fun of you-- no one's said anything like this. Someone suggested you might be libertarian but aside from that the only thing anyone's accused you of is confusing smart with smug.

If you find his humility false and grating, that's your prerogative, I suppose. Clearly a lot of other people feel it to be sincere and consider it a significant part of why they like him.

But obviously you're the sort who think that mild disagreement means we're calling you a flaming bigot or something. Which... uhm, no. I'm pretty sure the person who's missing the point at this moment is not one of your detractors.

I was mainly referring to the comment here (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/215220.html?thread=90422708#t90422708), as well as the couple of threads speculating that I'm an anti-intellectual.

I'm not actually a troll, though, so I'll leave this discussion alone from here. I'm not really sure where people are getting the idea that my secret was talking about all TDS fans, as opposed to an annoying minority. Whatever.

Re: OP of 101 here

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Annoying minority would be 'some people'. Not the general 'people' of your secret. Clarity helps, hyperbole doesn't.

sounds like a butthurt right-winger

Not "is", but "sounds like."

Considering your failure to note minor differences like that, I'm just going to go with "you apparently have a tin ear for intention and tone." And also that you just really like hyperbole, since "speculation on your intellectualism and lack thereof is hardly calling you a "a homophobic, abortion-hating, ultra-right Republican"

Uh, that was me. And I said "sounds like" because, in my experience, that's usually the kind of person who loathes The Daily Show. But I'm always willing to admit when I'm wrong. The gay abortion thing comes from someone who was trolling some conservative boards, saying that Obama was going to force everyone to get gay married and have gay abortions. I thought it was funny :(

Like the other people said, it's the hyperbole and not recognizing tone that's your problem. Go ahead and dislike TDS if you want, just don't be surprised when people respond to generalizations made about them.

Re: OP of 101 here

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you really read the comments. No one cares if you don't like the show. People just think your assumptions about fans' intentions and knowledge are a little ridiculous.

Re: OP of 101 here

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to write a long, thoughtful reply but decided to keep it simple:

CRY MOAR.

Re: OP of 101 here

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
But your secret combined the "morons" with your analysis of Jon Stewart and implied that all fans thought the same way. You could have been much clearer in your original secret.

I can't speak to what the rest of the world likes to watch. All I said was that I find him smug, self-satisfied, and off-putting. I have the right to be rubbed the wrong way! Shocking, I know.

And other people have the right to have a different opinion and say so. And they did. I'm curious, what did you think was going to happen by posting this secret? Did you think that you would get nothing but agreement? I'm not trying to attack or accuse you of anything, here -- I'm genuinely curious.

Liberals are supposed to stand for diversity; or at least the liberals that I associate with do.

For every three liberals I've met that genuinely do support this, I've met a liberal who supports diversity--as long as you completely agree with them on everything. (Not exact measures, of course, just a general, wild guess.)

To their credit, the ones that really do are the majority. It's just that the jerks are, well, a vocal minority.

Luckily, my friends are the rational, reasonable liberals, and Anon on LJ is the nutty, jerky liberals, so I just shrug my shoulders and don't bother worrying about them. XD

Not all anons are nutty, jerky liberals. Some of them are nutty, jerky conservatives. :P

Oh yeah, I know. There's nuts and jerks in every group.

Re: OP of 101 here

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Much of this is clearly directed at only one commenter, as nearly all of the comments I've seen up until this say simply that Daily Show fandom has no misconceptions about what the show is and what Jon Stewart does.

You'll find that most people within the fandom are just as appalled as you are to know that there are folks who consider TDS real news.

Okay, I read all the comments...

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
...and I get the really strong impression that this is more personal to you than you'd like to admit. You ignored the comments that agreed with you and honed in on the couple that speculated about the kind of person you were (and really, they weren't anything more than speculation). Did you honestly expect all the comments to be 100% glowing agreement? This is Fandom Secrets, dude.

Anyway, I hope you work out whatever issues you've got with the show and it's fans. Or one fan who has pissed you off, I don't know.
