The whole POINT was to not judge people on appearances. Tish judged Priestly and Tadd. Jen judged Fuzzy. Piper judged Noah. Tadd judged Tish, Priestly, and Trucker. Trucker judged Zo.
Priestly did his whole rant on how people only seem to look at others and make assumptions on what they're like just by looking at them.
At the end they're all proven how wrong their assumptions were, giving the message of NOT judging people. Priestly showed Tish how she kept picking the wrong guys, missing what was in front of her. Even by the end Tish was the most endearing slut I'd ever seen. And it's so easy to identify with and care for the characters almost immediately.
My friends and I watched it in a whole group and thought it was fantastic and a really great message to send to people. Yeah, I didn't like that Priestly changed himself in the end, but I like to think that he went back to how he normally was afterwards anyway (even with the marriage scene). Maybe he himself even realized he was wearing a mask the whole time.
Did you guys get too distracted on how awesome Jensen looked and not bother to really pay attention? That means the message was missed even more since you obviously judged the movie for its eye candy and not what it was really about. :| This is so disappointing to me. My friends and I really can't wait to buy it.
Re: 138
(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)Actually, if I had been distracted by eye candy, I'd be trying to find any redeeming factor in the movie like, oh say, you are. Reread the secret. I did not at any point express butthurt over the actual physical change of Priestly from punk to prep. It was the idea that he had to become something other than who he was in order to "belong." If you failed so much at comprehending what I wrote, then no matter you actually missed the underlying truth behind the movie's "message."
Whatever message they were trying to express in the film failed miserably because they contradicted themselves so much. The "endearing slut" as you put her still didn't give the nice guy the time of day until he physically changed how he looked. She still judged him, and if the movie is to be believed, the nice guy will cater to her whims because of such.
Maybe he himself even realized he was wearing a mask the whole time.
You cannot assume on a character because we were never shown this. Instead, the character we had been presented with all movie was someone who reveled in his individuality. Took pride in his hair, loved his kilt, these were the concrete examples we were given about Priestly's character. And yet he still bowed to the pretty girl's judging attitude. Tried and failed to get her to see what was underneath, and it wasn't until he catered to her judging attitude that he found happiness with her. Some message.
Re: 138
(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)Exactly. If they just wanted an excuse to show the dramatic physical transition from Priestly to prep (because hey, it was fun to see), they could have just had Tish say that yeah, she'd go out with him, but that she'd prefer to go out with the Priestly she knows and is familiar with; have her pointedly make the choice to accept Priestly the way he is. If that's too predictable and cliche, they could have had her ask Priestly out, which would have also been a nice way to show her taking some control over her own life.
And as the secret points out -- the Tish/Boaz incident was only one of the many problems this film had with it's 'message'.

Actually, I didn't judge your secret on looks as it was an okay use of the movie poster and decently eye-catching. I'm responding with my own opinion in accordance to what you and others said.
I agree that the ending put me a little off in terms of Priestly changing, but we have no concept of the passage of time between that scene and the wedding. If I remember correctly, Priestly was wearing the same outfit as when he walked in so it very well may have been the same day. This could have been elaborated on, yes, but I don't think that kills the movie or necessarily changes the message. I just think he was proving a point to her and she understood it. Some awesome message indeed.

First anon never mentioned anything about you judging the secret on looks. He/she said you failed at reading comprehension, and you just proved him/her right.
And let's face it, you never actually addressed the other topics the OP mentioned.
