This is another troll secret. The secret maker isn't being genuine, and is just being transphobic. They know that it's not that hard to get around the rules (are there any against transphobia?) if they just make it look vaguely fandom related.

If we don't allow secrets that have opinions other people don't share, what is the point of this being a secret community?

If you don't want to discuss the secret, just don't?

nayrt but this. The mere existence of a controversial opinion shouldn't be an automatic troll call.

In the hypothetical scenario where people are trying to use secrets for promotion of bigotry, that would sort of put people in a bind where they have to either engage or let bigotry stand unchallenged. So it would be worth thinking about whether the policy of "if you don't want to talk about it, don't" makes sense and leads to good conversations in those scenarios.

It's only tangentally about fandom, though.

nayrt

this is a good way to look at it I think.

LOL what bullshit. Someone once wrote something about how "people" should know more about mental illness and didn't even specify that "people" meant "people in fandom" and case left it up, so if that's fandom, everything is fandom.

Sites that take this policy tend to end up flooded with so much hate speech, everyone who isn’t hateful leaves. The Escapist and Know Your Meme are typical examples.

Actually, let me add on to this. FS is relatively friendly to people who Won’t Deal With This Shit. Like if you’re the sort of person who will never read about [trigger] and will Not Deal With any site where it’s posted, FS is okay for you because the triggers are marked. But if you Won’t Deal With transphobia, and there’s transphobia on FS, then you won’t post on FS. A lot of the people I’ve encountered on the Internet who Won’t Deal With transphobia are, to put it bluntly, better people than the transphobes I’ve encountered, and I would much rather have them in this community than have transphobes in this community.

Warning for them sounds at least like a good compromise. Thank you.

"But a lot of the reason why people keep secrets is because those types of thoughts aren't nice ones."

This. As one of the secret makers here (and one who makes secrets out of other peoples' comments though #5 isn't one of mine), I've read/made a lot of not-very-nice secrets that are probably THE reason why someone intended them to be secrets, posted anonymously, to a community designed for that exact purpose.

Am I crazy about the sentiments of racism, bigotry, etc.? Nope. But I don't police for moral content using my personal standards. Neither do I assume that every time a really nasty opinion comes up, it must be someone trolling. Maybe it is, sometimes? But I can't know that for certain. People have unpleasant, sometimes hateful opinions IRL, all the time. It's a genuine experience for them, not something made up. I don't think the community should ban those secrets just because they contain a subject that's controversial or unpleasant.

Tagging them is a great compromise, though.

Do we really need secrets from transphobes? Do we need secrets from racists? Do we need secrets from misogynists? Etc.

I understand that there haven't been as many secrets as before in busier times, but do we need to allow people full of hatred to have a platform to stand on and propagate a message? The main reasons I've gone from a submitter of secrets to a lurker is because there's just no moderation of secrets that are just clearly and openly hateful, and it bothers me that the hateful stuff never gets stomped out.

There's no end to controversial and hot takes about fandom, so I don't see why we have to abide with a hateful person who keeps pushing the boundaries of how much hate they get away with openly before it no longer counts as tangentially fandom related.

All of this.

Secret no 5 is not "full of hatred". It's a personal story. Unless you are saying no-one is allowed that story because it isn't in line with your view/experience, in which case you're an idiot.

I think you're making the right call on this, Case, and I appreciate the amount of thought you've clearly put into it.
