Untameable/ Mo Dao Zu Shi Links/Discussion Thread

(Anonymous) 2020-01-17 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Assuming these things are one and the same:

1) Does anyone have the live action Links?
2) Did they actually do a secoind season to the animation?
3) I will read the manga/webtoon/manhua (I'm guessing it's manhua) if there is no other option

4) LET'S DISCUSS!!!

I was an anon from a post from long ago, it was likely a secret featuring the animation that got me into it (along with discussion with a few other nonnies here). So thank you, OP from last week/a few days ago, and there are definitely people who want to discuss it!

1) It's on Netflix, so I don't have any links, sorry!
2) According to Wikipedia, yes? I haven't seen it, though:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mo_Dao_Zu_Shi#Novel

3) I've read the translation of the novel, which isn't great but will get the job done:

https://exiledrebelsscanlations.com/novels/grandmaster-of-demonic-cultivation/

Warning: the actual sex scenes are terrrrrrrrrible. :(

I've finished the novel translation but haven't finished the series. I'm enjoying both, but like the series a bit more because they kinda cut down on the plot so it's easier to understand. And of course, for Wang Yibo's ethereally beautiful Lan Wangji. <3

Yay! Thank you for responding!

1) Gotta get back oin Netflix!
2) time for some sleuthing
3) Thank you! I'll read with caution lol

The animation ?while not the best) I think dies a fair job at elucidating the plot, you can definitely follow who and why, although sone if the political intrigue might have been glossed over/I don't recall. THE UST IS LUFE in this show! I'm glad to hear it remains the same in the live action.I just looked him up....o ooo Lord I'm gonna cry, lol beautiful long haired men in period or fantasy clothing makes me weak

Then my friend, you are in luck... I can't remember the last time I saw so many beautiful men with long hair in one show. Everyone is eye candy, seriously!

Hi there! I'm watching the series now. I think I'm like ten episodes in. I wasn't familiar really with the books or other adaptations beforehand, though I'd heard the name floating around once or twice since I'm a shameless fujoshi and I also love wuxia.

I'm really liking the series so far. Even though I'm told the BL was cut, I appreciate that right, it does feel like the actors are aware their characters have sexual tension and are going with it. (I hope that's the case!) It's also really beautiful. Some of the special effects are kind of cheesy in comparison to modern Hollywood technology, but for the most part, it's fine. I'm absolutely nuts for all the gorgeous costumes and scenery. Aghhh I want to wear all of those clothes!

As far as the story, it does seem a little slow so far - I thought the "flashback" was going to be brief but it seems like it's the real story now, and there's a lot of episode time wasted to rather redundant, useless scenes. But I enjoy it all, because the main character is so enjoyable. Even when he's being annoying, I just can't get enough of his goofy expressions. Plus, virtually every male and female lead is absolutely gorgeous. I'm kind of getting the story, though there are a lot of names and I have trouble keeping it straight. Overall, I'm having fun, though.

I wish there was more wuxia style fighting, but it does feel like they don't have the budget for that (because they spent all their money on... clothes and scenery, I guess?) but oh well. I really am enjoying it, and am glad I finally gave it a try!

The explicit BL content was cut, but... honestly, the UST is through the roof. Lan Wangji's long, lingering looks get me every time. You can't NOT see the relationship.

Yeah, the 30 episodes of flashback is kind of tough but it's interesting and useful for understanding peoples' backstory later on. The second half of the series really changes gear though, so be prepared for that.

It's not wuxia, and that becomes evident really quickly. Some fighting scenes are better than others and I kind of wish they'd gone a little harder on that aspect, too. But everything else makes up for it, IMO.

1) ftr (for anyone like me who still lives in the dark ages and doesn't have netflix) you can also watch it on Youtube and on Viki. The subs for all three are slightly different, and they all have their weaknesses.

2) they sure did! it's 8 whole episodes (: you can also watch the whole donghua on Youtube, although again, the subs could definitely be better.

I have no idea if any of those are region locked in any way so. Sorry in advance if they are.

3) The manhua is great! It follows the novel much more closely than the donghua (or the live action, which is definitely the furthest from the novel), and you get some different visuals for things that show up in all of them. I recommend checking all three adaptations out, tbh, along w/ the novel. (I also hear good things about the audio drama, but I haven't listened to it myself so)

Thanks for the links! It'll be helpful when I rec it to others who don't have Netflix and I'll definitely watch the donghua when I'm finished with the live action one.

I really love the audio drama. It's closest to the novel, except for the manhua maybe - I think they have much more leeway re:censorship when it comes to audio dramas, considering a lot of BL webnovels get great and fairly accurate/censorship free ADs.

Hooray! I'm always happy to see people enjoying this one. Though I have been a bit out of the fandom because I'm not into a lot of the drama series only based new fan content and it's also getting a bit too big for my tastes. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the series and fandom but I liked it better when it was a it smaller. Also, the fact that my rareship gets zero new content is sad. I'm also more into other BL novels by now. But MDZS still has a place in my heart.

1. Netflix, but it's also on viki https://www.viki.com/tv/36657c-the-untamed

2. There was a second mini season. Sadly, it covered almost none of the actual plot but added some weird unnecessary sideplot that had nothing to do with the novel so those 8 episodes didn't cover much ground at all. The reason for the short season is likely that studios have to hand in their shows beforehand (in the season before it airs) to be looked over because of censorship and since it came out last summer, it had to be done by spring and they had just finished the first season in àutumn, so it's no wonder they didn't get to do a full season. There was supposed to be an animated chibi series as well, not sure what became of that... in any case, I think all the popularity of the live action series Will probably make a new ßeason more likely.

3. The manhua isn't that far along yet so the fan translation of the novel might be best. I think the translation is okay for a free fan translation and yeah, the smut is bad (like, "15 year old's first fanfic smut after only reading weird yaoi manga as reference" bad) but it's only at the very end and in the extras.

I'm always open for discussion!
