Having read the book summaries....

the entire thing has the "I'm a clever male writer" all over it and then the ending flops. Like "clever male writer" endings tend to do. (eyes Moffat)

Yes, I know, they're the book summaries. I hope the tv show does better. I don't have much hope given the rabid fanbase, but I have a tiny bit of hope.

(I think Bethesada put the games after the books for a pretty good reason. Oye vie.)

Yen was never that shallow in books, I loved her character and she actually made a decent mom for Ciri. Witcher 3 video game took it even further, where Yen stakes Geralt's adoration of her on knowing the truth and aims to break djinn's curse to see if the love between them is real or just magic.

Show's Yen is just completely different. Very shallow. Fun thing is, writer of the series is a woman and claims to be the great defender of female cause.

I think it's there, but the screenplay of the last two episodes is too busy being clever in bringing all the characters (including callbacks to half of the guest stars) into the last episode to really stick Yennifer's character development moment. Then there's the timeline issue where Yennifer gets over 50 years parallel to Geralt's 40 and Ciri's handful of days. So the "I'm sick of being a wicked witch" monologue is a tough sell.
