I do understand you are using people with anorexia/bulimia, but what does help being 600 lbs?

Do you understand there's an entire range of healthy human weights or does "fat" always mean "600 lbs" to you?

AYRT—I was talking about the protective effects of being overweight/slightly obese in seniors, who tend to do better at not breaking bones/wasting away than their thin counterparts. And not many people argue that 600 lbs is a healthy weight, any more than a 60 lb adult is healthy.

But I know skinny people who live on junk food and never exercise, and fat people who run marathons and don’t eat meat. I’m, I guess, a “bad” fat person in that I eat lots of junk, but I also eat all my fruits and veggies, no meat, no soda, no alcohol, never smoked, and walked 2,374 miles last year and am aiming to do the same this year.

Weight, by itself, isn’t a great indicator of health unless you’re talking the severely under- or over-weight.

But also, poor health isn’t some kind of moral failing. It sucks enough to be in bad shape, whether that’s breaking bones, heart issues, or always freezing because you can’t keep weight on, or joint pain and heart issues because you’re fat. Adding to the sucky experience by being cruel or judgmental to suffering people makes you an asshole.

Tell my grandparents about these protective effects of obesity in seniors. My grandpa got type 2 diabetes, and my grandma's legs developed secondary osteoarthritis and she's in constant pain. Can't walk, can't sit, can't sleep, because of the pain. Both a result of their obesity. Now they keep telling me to not end up like them and seeing what they're going through, I really don't want to suffer the same.

And btw, my grandparents also ea all their veggies, never touched cigarettes or alcohol, and before my grandma's legs gave in, she used to love long walks. That did't protect her.

I know plenty of thin seniors with arthritis. Anecdotes prove nothing, but take whatever action you like. It may include choosing to be born to different people.

AYRT—if we’re bringing relatives and family history into it, I doubt I’ll live to be old because my parents lived to be 60 (dad) and 67 (mom) and while my mother was overweight when she died, it was almost all fluid retention and she’d been malnourished for a couple of years by then. Only my dad’s parents lived past their 70s; my dad’s younger and mom’s middle brother are still alive at 67 and 73. The rest died in their 40s, 50s, and early 60s. None of them were fat, except dad’s mom who lived to 86.

My dad was literally insane about healthy eating and exercise—these days he’d be called an orthorexic and he used to hit me and scream if I ate anything that wasn’t natural/organic/unprocessed because he was a schizophrenic and he mostly fixated on what my mom and I were allowed to eat.

I’m lucky I can eat vegetables and exercise without panic attacks after having meals frisbeed into the yard and being thrown across the kitchen for not eating the mix of brown rice, sprouted legumes, sauerkraut, plain boiled beans, nutritional yeast, and spirulina that my dad ate for most every meal, being force-fed multiple adult doses of vitamins a day, being stranded in dad’s rowboat and made to row ashore before I was 10 or stranded miles from home and walking/biking home over 10 miles because cars were evil.

I wasn’t fat as a kid but I wasn’t slender, either. But I was always hungry because being force-fed super high doses of vitamins as a preteen amounted to poisoning and I threw up a lot.

Whenever I got my hands on junk food or anything that wasn’t bland brown rice/bean/steamed veggie slop I inhaled it. And it usually stayed down and I was full afterwards, which was rare at home.

Basically I’ll probably die fat because I’d rather die than restrict what/how much I eat ever again. *shrugs*

Also my dad’s remaining brother is a normal weight and has crippling arthritis, and my mom’s arthritis was getting pretty bad those last couple of years, and my mom’s normal weight mom and grandmother had type 2 diabetes, and everybody but my dad died of lots of cancer and booze, so I’m probably screwed no matter what.
