It may also be how one defines relatable and "like me". I can relate to a Japanese conman who lives in a world with ghosts and psychic powers, despite being a northern European woman who couldn't lie her way out of a wet paper bag and certainly does not deal with the paranormal. This is because I can see myself in his self esteem issues and the way he doesn't like to open up to people.
By my definition this character is a lot like me, but it sounds like by your definition he is nothing like me.
