[Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Magic Knight Rayearth]

I would judge someone if that was the only reason they gave. I'm pretty sure I really liked all three of these as a kid, though. Being smart outside of battle IS a character trait in itself, even if it's annoying the source material doesn't show their smarts in battle.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm not sure how well they could really show smarts in battle given that 99% of fights in magical girl series are literally just the same fight with a different coat of paint.

Why is there a character called Lettuce?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
All of the characters in Tokyo Mew Mew are food-named.

Ichigo or Strawberry is the protagonist.

Minto/Mint is the second girl.

Lettuce or Retasu up there.

Purin or Pudding.

Zakuro or Pomegranate.

The aliens are Kisshu/Quiche/Kish and Tart and Pai.

Thanks. That is certainly something.

Because anime.

Hey, Bridget/Lettuce was not boring! Or maybe she was, it's been forever since I watched Tokyo Mew Mew (watched about half in English and the rest in Japanese), but I remember really liking her because I loved the shy, smart girl archetype. That's probably why I liked Mercury and Fuu too.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't boring. Her entire entrance was how she used her powers to bully the people who bullied her. And tbh, it was cathartic.

OP

That was the one episode where she wasn't boring. And then she joined the main team and never did anything interesting again.

I think you're bitter. But go off, I guess. She literally overcomes her fears, jumping into the water to save someone, which is tbh more interesting than Ichigo's "OMG I LOVE MASAYA" melodrama.

Lettuce! LMAO!!!!

I've heard some stupid ass names in anime but that one takes the cake. Or salad.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
All of the Tokyo Mew Mew characters are named after food.

Ichigo (Strawberry), Mint, Lettuce, Pudding, Zakuro (Pomegranate), Quiche, Pai, Tart...

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's still the worst of the bunch. Or buffet.

Wait, since when was Fuu the weakest MKR girl? She was the only one with healing powers, which was pretty important. And I never got the impression that she was weaker than Umi when it came to fighting (though I wish they'd let her keep her original bow).

Then you're likely judging people for reasons they cited as kids. My favorite was Rei and then Makoto because I thought they were the prettiest. I may have grown to appreciate their characters more as I got older but that was the start of it.

first of all rei was show to be equally smart but she wasn't in school. and I loved ami because she was most like me, shit attacks and all, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a long time since I've ready Tokyo Mew Mew, but.... Lettuce was supposed to be smart? I thought her character trait was "shy." Mint seemed like the smartest of the crew.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ami was my favorite because she had blue hair and water attacks. Quoting a comment from the His Dark Materials secret: "My childhood criteria for liking characters was pretty simple."

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
As someone whose childhood criteria for favorite characters was 80% 'the one that's prettiest' I strongly second this. :/

OP

They weren't kids, they were teenagers and early 20 somethings.

They may have picked their favs in their childhood? I know I did. Rei was my favorite. I picked her because she was the only one with dark hair like mine. If you'd ask me today my fav today, I'd still say Rei, because of the nostalgia

(Anonymous) 2020-01-21 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, and we had the same name!

Wasn't Mercury a strategist? From what I can recall she displayed a lot of her intelligence with tutoring Usagi, and through her computer knowledge. (which constituted as being impressive, given the fact it came out before 2000) Granted she was my least favourite of the scouts, and most of that was because I don't like that specific character type. But to judge someone for listing her as their favourite seems a little harsh, imo. The 'smart, and kickass' criteria was fairly popular in the early 2000's because characters (particularly female ones) were generally one or the other, rarely both. It made those traits stand out when they were paired together, and a viable reason to like a character.
I'm sure people like those characters for more than just that reason, but I don't find it strange to be the go to reasoning for characters this old.
