This all day. I get K/S. I really do. I just don't see it.

My complaint is that I ship Spock with McCoy and it's basically impossible to find fic that isn't OT3 with Kirk.

OMG! THERE'S ANOTHER ONE OF US!!!

My pairing was always Spock/McCoy

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
DA - same! Their interactions were more dynamic to me, they played off each other better, and I like the grudging respect they have for each other.

I will say that nostalgia goggles help a lot with this ship - if I saw TOS for the first time these days, I think all of Bones' speciest remarks would put me off. But, well, product of its time, and at least they targeted a fictional species and were quite progressive in regards to real oppressed groups.

Hello fellow Spock/McCoy shipper!

Let me throw two fast recs at you:
Transporter Transformation on AO3 and the Spock/McCoy fanzine Spiced Peaches on lj and Tumblr.

Yay, Spock/McCoy shipping! I dig it way more than K/S.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-23 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
i've always understood why people ship them too, but i've never felt the pull either, not in ToS, and certainly not in nu!Trek where kirk is mostly just a dick.

it's just one of those OG fandom ships that has never appealed to me despite seeing a lot of good arguments as to why they work as a ship. but hey, sometimes we don't gel with something and there's no real good reason why.

Same - I understand it completely but it just doesn't interest me.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get it in ToS and the movies, but not in nu!Trek at all. They tried to force them together and it really didn't work.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I was actually thinking of posting a secret along these lines!

I've never been able to ship it, either. I don't mind that people do. I don't have any problem with the ship and I don't ship either of them with anyone else. Sometimes I wonder if it's because I've been watching TOS since before I can even remember so it's like these characters are relatives or really close friends or something and I just don't want to think about their sex lives, thank you very much. I don't even ship it in non-porny way, though. I just don't see it. I get why people do, and I've certainly shipped pairings with similar dynamics (hello, Johnlock) but I've just never felt this one.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Same. But I very rarely ship friends. I can think of SGA and Hawaii 5-0 off the top of my head. I read Bones/Mirror!Spock tho.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh 100%, their ToS relationship is wonderful and they're so devoted to each other in a lovely way, but none of it pings my shipper radar at all. Which is a shame because I know I'd have a lot of content to read if I did. But it is what it is.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't help that the show manages to nohomo everyone by giving everyone but Sulu and M'Benga a turn at the girlfriend of the week plot.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well clearly that's fine if you don't see it, not every ship is going to be obvious to every person.
With Kirk/Spock, it is the paring that arguably invented slash. It's not meant to besome canon fact, but when you understand their characters, and roles that they play, the potential for more is very much there. It's mostly with Spock, being (half) Vulcan, and dedicating his life to the ways of Vulcan ideology, there are many times he choses personal reasons over that of logical ones when Kirk is involved. Kirk also seems to hold a special place for Spock that no one else seems to share.

This is a show from the 60's, so their relationship should not judged on the same bar as it is would be today. I'm not going to try to convince you of their legitimacy or anything, because the fact of the matter is that it is all just interpretation. You don't have to see it, but the cult following it had since it's origin kinda disputes that there just isn't anything there at all.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
At the very least, it's a very close friendship between hotties. That's more justification than a lot of popular slash pairings get, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think the problem is people trying to view the relationship through too modern a lens or expecting more than is there, but rather that some people just don't feel the right vibe or click with the characters in the right way to want to ship them.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
dude, this isn't about ppl judging it by a modern lens or what have you, it's ppl just not shipping it bc for whatever reason they don't vibe with it. it's not a personal attack, chill.

me and many others in this post have even said that we get WHY ya'll ship it, it just doesn't pull for us. that's it. ship away and enjoy it, we're not stopping you.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
it being the ship that started slash fandom doesn't mean we're all obligated to like it? i recognize it's place in fandom history, i just don't ship it. that's all.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-25 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Shipping a particular ship is like loving a particular flavor of ice cream. No matter how popular the flavor, some people just aren't going to love it as much, and it's not something you can convince people to love via rational argument or argumentum ad populum.

There's also a lot of more recent popular slash ships that have no more basis in canon than Kirk/Spock so I don't see why it matters that the show is from the 60s.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-24 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh big same. I absolutely see WHY people ship it but I just don't feel it at all.
