Between this and the Doctor shopping the Master to the Nazis, I was just WTF. Like, we have a woman being made to kneel before a man and a white woman shopping a man of colour to literal Nazis for a booyah moment. What the fuck, guys.

Chris Chibnall's writing is....not good.

I still remember how everyone loved Chibnall's 'Dinosaurs on a Spaceship' because SEXY RUPERT GRAVES (whose character was an out-and-out misogynist) and there was dialogue people interpreted as shading Moffat. But he still had Nefertiti, one of the most powerful queens of Ancient Egypt who almost certainly ruled as a pharaoh, deciding fuck that, she'd rather fuck the sexy misogynist.

Did people really like that one? All I remember is grumbling about Eleven "killing" that guy--the guy who was deliberately hurting people and outright refused his offer to help.

Chibnall's writing on Torchwood is what turned me off of him. He did the rape alien and the bikini-cyberwoman episodes, for starters.

And yet nobody talks about the Nazi thing.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-25 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Can someone explain the Nazi thing to me, actually? Because I didn't pick up on it but I was pretty zoned at the end of the episode

The Master chose to use his powers to hide out as a high ranking Nazi in the Nazi party during WWII in order to track down the Doctor. This is why I'm not too bothered about the whole "a white woman shopping a man of colour to literal Nazis for a booyah moment". It's not like the Doctor randomly handed over the Master to the Nazis for giggles, that was 100% his own nastiness rebounding on him.

But she did remove the "filter" that was keeping them from seeing him AS a non-white person.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-25 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. It's almost as if someone who looks very much like a brown person shouldn't have infiltrated the Nazis and posed as a high ranking Nazi, huh?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-25 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah brown people who are dicks totally deserve to be tortured by Nazis!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-25 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. The Master and the Doctor are in Nazi-occupied Paris, the Master has infiltrated the Nazis so he can locate the Doctor and is using some sort of facial filter technology so they don't see that he's not white. To get the Master out of her way and steal his Tardis, the Doctor arranges for one of her allies (Noor Inayat Khan, a British spy) to send a message designed to be intercepted by the Nazis revealing the Master is a spy for the British. She then jams his filter so the Nazis can see that he's not actually white and will, therefore, treat him accordingly. We next see him in the modern day and he makes a reference to the shit he's gone through since his capture - implying that yes, the Nazis very much tortured him.

imo, if the Doctor had left his filter alone or if the Master had been a white male throughout the episode - I'd still feel a bit icky about the plotline since selling anyone out to the Nazis is pretty inexcusable. But at least this way it's more about his nastiness. But the show explicitly makes his race a factor. And, btw, the Doctor is not an innocent bystander watching as the Master trips himself up on his nastiness, she is an active agent, setting him up not only to be exposed as an imposter but also as a man of colour to a bunch of white supremacists.

I thought it was clear that The Master had not only infiltrated, he had earned that rank and openly endorsed them. Also this is the same character who previously murdered over over 700 million humans (the decimation), so no real fucks given for him.

You didn't get that rank in the SS and be completely innocent regarding nazi genocides and war crimes.
