I think the fact that supporting rape in real life actually hurts people, and not all people in fandom are supportive of rape fics. I don't like them, I would rather not see them, however I don't think there is enough of a case to ban them, or to believe that people who read them are into it themselves.

And like someone else said to equate the two is to associate being gay with a kink and a fetish, when it really isn't.

I'm not saying fandom supports rape fics, and I'm not saying supporting rape is like supporting gay marriage (it just hit me how fucked up that sounded without clarification). I think the inverse: supporting gay marriage and being against rape, when you have that mindset you don't understand how anyone could be against letting homosexual/bisexuals express themselves, or see rape in an attractive light. I guess I was weirded out by finding someone who wrote and read rape fics but ranted against people not for gay marriage. I guess it just didn't add up to me.

I responded to ronsard below, that that's probably the coming home point: these people are equating homosexuality with a kink or a fantasy. Getting involved in fandom and not thinking clearly could develop confusion where they see homosexuality as an abstract fantasy and when confronted with it in reality do not understand it.
