It doesn't work well either way. If I take a stand on this position, I lose friends either way. Because unlike in fandom, most of my friends in real life ARE yes on Prop 8.

I guess my problem is I do look at the people. And all I'm doing is looking, because I'm not directly effected, because I can see both arguments. And with what limited judgment I do have, I believe the government in California does recognize that they are valid human beings through civil unions.

To be honest, I don't want to argue Prop 8 any further, if that's okay with you. There are too many strong feelings on this and no acceptable gray area, and it's too heated an argument for me to handle. Thank you for your input, though. I really do appreciate it.

people's rights > people's beliefs
people's rights > people's friendships

Say your friend doesn't like looking, or hearing about, interracial marriages. It doesn't mean that it's okay for them to ban them from existing.

You say that you lose friends either way, but one is losing friends because they want equal rights, and another is losing friends because they believe their opinions and beliefs are more important than other people's rights.

It's not an easy, but it is a clear, choice for me.

Civil Unions are NOT equal to marriage under the law.
I could go out tommorrow and marry someone I just met. To register a civil union, I have to prove that I have only been with my parner for the last year, that we have co-habitated for that entire year and that both of our names can be documented as paying the expenses for that habitation.

Replace "gay" with "black" and "civil union" with "separate school" and you have Brown vs Kansas City Board of Education.*

Turning gays into second class citizens through legislature like Prop 8 is damaging.

Separate is never, ever, EVER equal.

So you can stand up for equal rights for everyone, and lose friends. Or you can oppose equal rights, and not only lose friends but directly harm those former friends (by supporting legislation to take away their right).

One of these certainly looks like a more moral choice than the other.
