How would I go about doing that? I play a lot of games, but I've never played online, so it's a bit intimidating. :)

ha, how much detail do you want? 'cause i rarely get to fangirl over this so i can totally go on about tactics and classes and stuff XD

basically, get the game. getting an illegal version isn't really an option. if you know someone that has it see if they have a free three day trial. the first trick is getting the damn thing to run, but i have a rather old computer (read: from 2000ish), so it might be easier for you. [edit] dur, totally forgot you said you already have the Orange Box[/edit]

next, load up the game and check out "find servers". you want to look for something with a low latency. latency being ping, ping being "you are less likely to lag with a lower number." everything else is sort of a judgment call. personally i enjoy playing control point and capture the flag games with usually 5 vs 5 or 8 vs 8. i avoid the mostly full 24+ servers as i lag really badly.

once you get in, it's basically the learning curve. my main complaint with the game is the lack of any sort of training level. i used to play FPSes a lot, but back when Doom II was fairly new and Quake III was still a rumour. so yeah, i can run and jump and shoot, but the intricate nature of building a level 3 sentry, charging an uber, sapping a building, rocket jumping and scoping for a charged shot were lost on me when i started, and the only way to learn it is pretty much trial and error.

as for finding a good server. can take awhile. i'm lucky, i have an in game friends list of 20+ people and all, save 4, are people i know in real life. while we don't have our own server right now, we usually join an empty one with a low ping once a week and just have fun. otherwise i'd heard good things about the Baron's Pub server on a forum, so i've played there a few times and some of my friends are regulars at Dr. Him's Laboratory so i end up there a lot as well.

i'd suggest trying to communicate to your team that you're new if you're a bit unclear as to what you should do. there's an ingame chat feature you can do it with, or if you have a mic you can do that as well. though, i'm going to use the stereotypical LJ assumption of "there are no males in fandom" and you are female. apologises if i'm wrong. i have heard several girls playing using mics. usually there's no big deal, but i have had the occasional ass trying to hit on me because i was using my mic. just a warning. also, announcing you are new or unclear you do run the risk of asses who're all "omg, a n00b. that fucking sucks blahblahblahblah", or alternately silence, but most people are decent enough to try and help you out. so long as you're a newb in the sense that you will ask questions and take advice, it usually works out okay. though this is preferred in smaller matches. if you're in a huge game it's less likely someone will be able to walk you through the steps.

from then on it's basically practice, luck and common sense. there are days where your team will completely decimate the opponent, other days you're going to die over and over again and there are days where it's completely give and take and you have a great balance.

I'd love to get some help from you, but um...stupid question first: I have the game on PS3, I don't suppose it's the same thing?

not a stupid question at all actually. yes, the console versions are pretty much identical. the main difference is there are unlockable weapons for certain classes that aren't currently available to you, but no one can get them so it's at least even. also console versions can only play with other consoles. i have it for the PC, so i can't play with you, sorry :(

hope you enjoy it :) and i'd recommend starting with Scout, Pyro or Medic. they have more forgivable learning curves.
