according to an interview with the costume designer, that was deliberate! it's meant to show that he doesn't bother to take care of these good quality things he can afford

Huh, never thought of it like that. I figured that he'd want to look his best to show off his wealth, or something like that. It's an interesting take on his character, and clever showing from the costume department.
