I haven't watched the show yet. (I'm reading the books first so that I don't spoil myself and can watch them in a binge when I'm further along).

But I can hands down confirm that book!James at the very least is objectively terrible and only gets worse the more he shows up. (Not sure how closely show canon follows the development of the Agatha/James relationship post Murderous Marriage)

To the point that even some of the characters are constantly telling Agatha that she needs to stay away from him because 1) she deserves better and 2) they always bring out the worst in each other.

And definitely agree that Charles (or at least book!Charles) is a far more interesting character. Though admittedly, as you pointed out hardly the stable, monogamous force she needs. But at least he's fun and supportive of Agatha's mystery solving, where James is only so when it suits him/can make him look good.
