...today I was exhausted by...

... the uni's whole freaking network going down which, I thought, fine, that's okay, no big deal, don't need the internet to work today. Except - yeah, EVERYTHING connects to the internet. As in, you can't use the copy machines because, without the network, you cannot log in. BAH. Which meant a whole scramble to be able to print my finals. Because yeah. End of the semester is the perfect time for a tech clusterfuck. Fortunately, it all worked out. Unfortunately, my students now think I'm a total technical ludite who doesn't know how to use a printer. I mean, there's no way to make "there were technical difficulties, but your papers are on their way down now" NOT sound like "I am a clueless old lady who doesn't know how to use basic technology". :/

I can relate. When the net goes down at work I can't get to any of the things I work on and some people at work seem to feel like I'm making excuses not to do anything. Probably the students know the network went down though?

It's really annoying sometimes how many things are so dependant on a working internet connection. They changed all the phone lines in our village to digital only some time ago and now you can't use a regular phone anymore once the internet connection goes down, which is something that can happen here on occasion and cellpone services aren't great here, either.

That sounds really stupid; There's no redundancy. Was it cheaper than copper phone lines (That still operate in case of a storm or emergency)?

I really don't know why they did it other than as a weird way of pretending they're somehow super advanced (which they aren't). In the end, it probably was a matter of money but honestly, who knows. They've made some very stupid decisions over the years.

Did you have to go through some kind of portal to print things out? Man, do I not miss having to load money onto our portal to print stuff out.

This goddamn virus that's going around. It's like the flu but not quite (it's not coronavirus), sore throat, head and body aches, coughing, lots and lots of coughing, mucus in lungs and sinuses, lack of appetite, hard to sleep because coughing, mild fever, general fatigue and feeling like a turd that's been stepped in. And the doctor said there's not much you can do about it besides let it run its course, and that it can last a month (I'm currently on week 2). It fucking sucks. Oh, and I have to go to work like this, because I don't have paid sick leave and I've already used up my allowed sick days (I get one). Fuck my life.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. You only get one sick day? I'm going to guess this is the US where I also live. That sucks. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. And yep, where else would I be but the good old USA where I get one sick day every 90 days, because that's how getting sick actually works doncha know.
