Fic-writing gripe

(Anonymous) 2020-01-31 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Someone in my fandom posted a porny idea for my OTP. I found the idea a bit hard to fully believe, but thought it was extremely hot anyway. I started writing a reply to their idea, just kind of and “imagine” type thing, and the next thing I knew I had over 1K words of something a lot like fic.

Except, because I started the thing as a comment, it just kind of picked up out of nowhere, so I decided to go back and write an opening for it. But then the opening got too long and I ended up feeling like I needed to flesh things out a little more to mesh the first half with the second half.

Then I just kept having to add things, because shit, I guess this is actually a for-real fic now, and if I don’t add some things it’s going to be incredibly texturally inconsistent.

And now I don’t even know. It’s like 8.5K and a hot mess. There are parts of it I really like, but ugh it’s such a mess.

The worst part is, the underlying concept that started the whole thing is still not something I find all that believable? So I’ve written an hot mess of an 8.5K fic that relies on a premise I don’t even buy.

Also, this is only the second fic I’ve written in ten years (which explains a lot about how I got myself into this situation in the first place, but also it explains why I am going to post this fucker even if I have to do it anon because it’s too shitty to own up to. I am NOT scrapping it, god damn it.)

FML.

I'm in a similar situation. It didn't start as a comment, but a short little one off, and it's now turned into a mess. The tone of the original part isn't at all consistent with the rest, so I've changed some things to make it flow better, but it's still off. This is the most I've written in years so I don't want to just give up on it, but I'm not sure where to go from here.
