I'd like to know more about his past too. I can't clearly recall if the manga ever made references, or at least important ones, to his past and why he is the why he is, but you're definitely right when you say both options are depressing. I'd really like to know why he has some certain personality traits, like how he seems incapable of loving another human being, or why he views everything as a specimen to be dissected.

I would like to know, too. I'd also like to know if he's really incapable/almost incapable of love, or if it's one of those really sad deals where he just thinks he is or was that way in the past and still thinks it applies. As for the dissection thing, I always thought that he was just a naturally curious person who took things too far, possibly because he's crazy for whatever reason.

I haven't read much of the manga, but that little flashback scene in the anime had a very interesting atmosphere to it. He almost seemed like he was in an altered state, really. And that makes me wonder about the nature of the whole thing. Did he have weird lapses in sanity when he was younger, "got better"/"grew out of it" after a while, and now the Kishin isn't so much affecting him directly as triggering a relapse? It's something to think about, because he was messed-up when he was younger, but he just seemed like a perfectly sane regular weird person up until he started losing it in the recent episodes.

I dunno, he's just so interesting.

That altered state theory you have is really plausible. What intrigues me are the scars and such all over his body. I want to know if they were self-inflicted or caused by something (or someone) else. He, in the beginning, just seemed like a very weird, but sane person, but know...not so much.

He really is an interesting character.

I always assumed he did all of them himself. Recently, I've been getting the sense that he didn't want to hurt anyone else in the name of science or whatever, so he just started taking it all out on himself at some point in the past.

Exactly. At first, he just seemed weird and fun and sort of morbid, but then he just sort of lost it, and... Damn. On a related note, what really struck me about him after some of his past came out and his current plotline began is that he seems... I don't know, I don't think "ashamed" is the right word to describe it. Like he knows something was/is wrong with him, and it's sort of his cross to bear.

Oh, indeed! All the characters in that show are interesting, but there's just something especially striking and complex about him.
