another Actual Gay here: i think it's all ambiguous subtext at best, but by all means, invalidate my orientation because i don't think a show ~hinting~ at gay without really meaningfully going there is praise-worthy.

As another actual gay, nobody said anything about it being "praise-worthy" except for you. Having on-purpose subtext that many people will interpret as obviously gay and others will miss completely is a neutral element of the show that's nonetheless there. Nobody here is talking about how it's praiseworthy, they're simply stating the fact that it exists.

Not all things featuring queerness need to be praised for their unambiguous canonness. Is the gay there in some way? Can I see it? Am I entertained? Great! It's done what it's supposed to do! I praise it for being well-written and entertaining, not for being ~representation~. And that's fine.

There are two separate discussions here that you're colliding. One, what subtext actually exists? Two, is that subtext praise worthy?
